Beekeeper Studio Alternative with
Execution Plans and Schema Compare
Beekeeper Studio is a clean, open-source SQL client for querying and editing table data. Jam SQL Studio covers that same daily work on Mac, Windows and Linux, and adds the tools no Beekeeper edition ships as of September 2026: execution plans, schema compare, data compare, charts from query results, and a local MCP server for AI agents.

When Beekeeper Studio Is the Better Choice
Jam SQL Studio does not replace Beekeeper Studio for everyone. Stay with Beekeeper if one of these describes you:
- You want open-source software. Beekeeper's Community Edition is GPLv3. Jam SQL Studio is closed source.
- You query engines Jam SQL Studio does not connect to — Redis, BigQuery or Redshift on Beekeeper's free edition, or MongoDB, ClickHouse, DuckDB and Snowflake on its paid plans. Jam SQL Studio connects to SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL/MariaDB, Oracle, SQLite and Azure Data Explorer.
- Your team shares connections and saved queries through a cloud workspace. Beekeeper's Professional and Business plans include one; Jam SQL Studio keeps connections and queries on each machine.
- You are a small company using the free edition at work. Beekeeper says its Community Edition is intended for students, individuals, non-profits and businesses with fewer than 10 employees and/or under $1m annual revenue. Jam SQL Studio's free tier is for personal, non-commercial use only; work use needs Pro.
Why Developers Switch from Beekeeper Studio
Beekeeper Studio is built around browsing and editing data. The usual reason to move is a task it has no tool for.
Finding Out Why a Query Is Slow
Beekeeper Studio runs queries but has no plan viewer; requests for one are still open on its issue tracker. Jam SQL Studio captures estimated and actual execution plans on SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Oracle, shows them as a tree or a graph with per-operator cost, and compares two plans side by side.
Comparing Two Environments
Schema Compare diffs the DDL of two connections and writes the ALTER/CREATE/DROP script; Data Compare does the same for rows with INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE statements. The free tier covers 200 objects per schema and 10,000 rows per table.
Letting an AI Agent Use the Database
Beekeeper's AI Shell is a chat inside the app. Jam SQL Studio also has an in-app chat, which uses your installed Claude Code or Codex CLI, and runs a local MCP server so Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor or GitHub Copilot can list connections and run queries. The server runs no queries until you allow read-only access or approval-gated writes.
Charting a Result Without Exporting It
Turn any result set into a bar, line, pie, area or scatter chart and save it as PNG or SVG. Beekeeper Studio has no chart view for query results.
Autocomplete That Knows Your Data
Declare a column as JSON or as an enum once, and the SQL editor suggests its JSON paths and allowed values while you type; declared loose foreign keys become JOIN suggestions. Enum columns get a value dropdown even without a native enum type, from a CHECK constraint or sampled values. See enum columns and JSON columns.
Features That Matter
Professional SQL development tools with a clean, modern interface.
AI Agent Support
In-app AI chat and AI Workspace, plus a local MCP server for policy-controlled queries from Claude Desktop, Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, OpenCode and GitHub Copilot.
Execution Plans
Tree and graph views of SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Oracle plans. Compare two plans side by side to confirm an index helped.
Schema Compare
Compare database schemas across connections. Generate ALTER/CREATE/DROP scripts to sync differences.
Data Compare
Compare table data between databases. Generate INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE scripts to sync row-level differences.
Built-in Charting
Create bar, line, pie, area, and scatter charts from query results. Export as SVG or PNG.
Visual Schema Overview
Interactive graph of tables, views, procedures and their foreign-key and routine references, on the free tier.
Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about switching from Beekeeper Studio to Jam SQL Studio.
Is Jam SQL Studio a good Beekeeper Studio alternative?
Yes, if you need more than querying and table editing. As of September 2026 no Beekeeper Studio edition has execution plan visualization, schema compare, data compare, charts from query results, or an MCP server; Jam SQL Studio has all five on its free Personal tier. Beekeeper Studio is the better fit if you want an open-source client or need engines Jam SQL Studio does not connect to, such as Redis, BigQuery or MongoDB.
Is Jam SQL Studio free like Beekeeper Studio Community?
Both have a free edition, with different terms. Jam SQL Studio's Personal tier is free for personal, non-commercial use and includes unlimited connections, execution plans, charts, the MCP server, and schema and data compare up to 200 objects and 10,000 rows per table; commercial use needs Pro at $9.99/month or $99/year. Beekeeper Studio Community is open source under GPLv3, and its pricing page says it is intended for students, individuals, non-profits and small businesses with fewer than 10 employees and/or annual revenue below $1m.
Does Beekeeper Studio have an MCP server?
Not as of September 2026. Beekeeper Studio's paid plans include an AI Shell that chats with models such as GPT-5, Claude, Gemini or a local Ollama model using your own API key, but there is no MCP server that an external agent can connect to; an MCP request is open on its GitHub issue tracker. Jam SQL Studio runs a local MCP server for Claude Code, Claude Desktop, Codex CLI, Cursor, OpenCode and GitHub Copilot. It starts blocked, and read-only access or approval-gated writes are opt-in.
Does Jam SQL Studio support the same databases as Beekeeper Studio?
They overlap on SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL, MariaDB and SQLite, which both support in their free editions. Jam SQL Studio also includes Oracle and Azure Data Explorer (KQL) on its free tier. Beekeeper Studio Community adds engines such as Redshift, BigQuery and Redis, and its paid plans add Oracle, CockroachDB, DuckDB, MongoDB, ClickHouse and Snowflake, among others (checked September 2026).
What features does Jam SQL Studio have that Beekeeper Studio doesn't?
Checked against Beekeeper Studio 6.1 in September 2026:
- Execution plans — SQL Server, PostgreSQL, MySQL and Oracle plans in tree and graph views, with side-by-side plan compare.
- Schema compare — DDL diff and a sync script between two connections.
- Data compare — row-level diff with INSERT/UPDATE/DELETE sync scripts.
- Charts — bar, line, pie, area and scatter charts from query results, exported as PNG or SVG.
- MCP server — external AI agents query your databases under a blocked-by-default policy.
- Enum filters from CHECK constraints and sampled values — Beekeeper's enum dropdown reads native enum types only.
Is Beekeeper Studio open-source?
The Community Edition is open source under GPLv3. The paid features live in the same repository under a commercial source-available license and are unlocked by the Indie, Professional, Business and Enterprise plans; cloud workspaces are on Professional and Business. Jam SQL Studio is not open source.
Can I migrate from Beekeeper Studio?
Jam SQL Studio has no Beekeeper Studio connection importer, so you recreate connections with the same host, port and credentials; your .sql files open unchanged. If you also have connections saved in DBeaver, DataGrip, TablePlus, Azure Data Studio, SSMS, MySQL Workbench, Navicat or pgAdmin, Jam SQL Studio can import those in one step.
