AI Filtering and Querying Like MongoDB Compass
MongoDB Compass has a natural-language bar: type "orders over $500 from last week" and it writes the filter or aggregation, sending your prompt and schema details to Azure OpenAI. SQL clients mostly offer the same thing through chat instead of a filter box:
- DBeaver: the AI Chat, free in Community if you bring an OpenAI key or GitHub Copilot, turns a request into SQL for the connected database.
- DataGrip: the
database-text-to-sqlagent skill (2026.2) explores the relevant tables before it writes the query, so column names come from the real schema. - SSMS and VS Code: GitHub Copilot Chat writes T-SQL; in SSMS 22.5+ it can also read the results grid and the execution plan.
- pgAdmin: the Query Tool AI chat does the same for PostgreSQL with the model you configured.
- Jam SQL Studio: there is no natural-language box in the Table Explorer filter row. Ask the AI Chat Sidebar, or an agent connected over MCP, and the query lands in your editor for you to read before you run it. Six task launchers (Explain this table, Generate test data, Document this schema, Optimize this query, Explain this error, Diagnose server load) open the chat with the prompt already written, and each one tells the agent not to execute anything itself.
Other SQL Tools With AI Features
- Oracle SQLcl and SQL Developer for VS Code: SQLcl has shipped an MCP server since 25.2 (July 2025); since 25.4 it defaults to its most restrictive level, and it records each call in a

- Navicat 18 (August 2026): Ask AI, Fill with AI and AI-assisted table design, building on the AI Assistant added in 17.2. Navicat's site does not document an MCP server as of September 2026.
- Beekeeper Studio: the AI Shell works with Claude, OpenAI, Gemini or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint and is included in the paid editions.

How Jam SQL Studio Handles AI Agents
Three ways in — a chat sidebar, an AI terminal workspace, and an MCP server for outside agents — all under the same permission levels.
Local MCP server that starts blocked
Enable it in Settings → AI Integrations and it listens on 127.0.0.1 (port 14507 unless taken) with a bearer token. Agents see your saved connections but never a password or connection string. At Block they can read schema and write into a query tab; Read-only allows SELECT, EXPLAIN, SHOW and PRAGMA; Confirm shows each write in an approval dialog with a countdown, and denies it if you don't answer.
Rules judged on the SQL, not the tool
Running a tab or a notebook cell is classified exactly like a direct query, and a statement the classifier cannot take apart — two statements in one tab, an unmatched quote — is refused at Read-only and Confirm. Committing or rolling back a transaction counts as a write. An agent can edit a notebook JavaScript cell but cannot run one at any level.
Chat sidebar on your own CLI
The AI Chat Sidebar in the Query Editor and SQL notebooks drives the Claude Code or Codex CLI already installed on your machine, so there is no API key to paste into Jam SQL Studio and no extra subscription. In a notebook it can add, edit and run cells.
One command for your agents
jam-sql add-skill installs the Jam SQL skill for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf and other agents it detects. Agents can also export a results grid to CSV, Excel, JSON, Markdown or SQL INSERT, but you pick the file location in the normal save dialog.
AI Workspace for file-based agents
An integrated terminal with a workspace folder: query tabs sync to .sql files, and CLAUDE.md, AGENTS.md, schema DDL and recent results are generated for the agent, with MCP configs for Claude Code, Cursor, OpenCode and VS Code. It depends on where the AI should live. As of September 2026: SSMS 22 with GitHub Copilot is the default for SQL Server work on Windows; VS Code with the MSSQL extension brings Copilot to SQL Server on Mac and Linux; DataGrip 2026.2 runs Junie, Claude Agent and Codex in its AI chat and exposes a built-in MCP server; DBeaver has an AI Chat in the free Community edition; pgAdmin 9.13+ adds an AI chat that uses your own model. Which SQL tools have an MCP server?
As of September 2026: Jam SQL Studio (local, off by default), DataGrip (built in since 2025.2), DBeaver through its free dbvr CLI and its CloudBeaver Enterprise and Team Edition web products, and Oracle SQLcl (since 25.2) for Oracle databases. SSMS 22 and DBeaver PRO 26.1 work the other way round: their AI chat can call external MCP servers, but they are not MCP servers for other agents. Navicat's site does not document an MCP server.
What is MCP and why does it matter for SQL?
MCP (Model Context Protocol) is an open standard that lets an AI agent call tools in another program. For SQL it means an agent such as Claude Code can list your connections, read schema and run queries through the database tool you already use, instead of you pasting schema into a chat. What matters is what the tool lets the agent execute and whether it ever sees your credentials.
Is it safe to let AI agents access my database?
Only with limits. Jam SQL Studio's MCP server listens on 127.0.0.1, never gives the agent a password or connection string, and starts at Block, where agents can read schema but execute nothing. Read-only allows SELECT, EXPLAIN, SHOW and PRAGMA; Confirm asks you in the app before each write. The level can differ per connection, queries default to 1,000 rows and 30 seconds, and tool calls are audited without the SQL text. JetBrains recommends a database user with read-only privileges for DataGrip's MCP server, and SSMS 22.9 removed Copilot Ask mode's ability to run arbitrary queries.
Does DBeaver or DataGrip have AI support?
Yes, both. DBeaver Community has an AI Chat that uses your OpenAI key or GitHub Copilot; DBeaver PRO adds query explanation, error fixing and completion, providers such as Azure OpenAI, Gemini, Ollama, Claude and Bedrock, and since 26.1 external MCP servers in AI Chat. DataGrip has JetBrains AI (an AI Free tier, AI Pro at $10/month, or your own key), runs Junie, Claude Agent and Codex in its chat, and has shipped a built-in MCP server since 2025.2.
What does GitHub Copilot in SSMS do?
GitHub Copilot in SSMS 22 became generally available in version 22.4.1 (March 2026). It offers chat, inline edits and optional code completions, can read the results pane and execution plan, and has an Agent Mode, previewed in 22.7 (June 2026) and generally available since 22.10.2 (September 2026), that can use MCP servers you add. It works with Copilot Free as well as paid Copilot plans, and SSMS itself runs only on Windows.
Can I use Claude Code with my SQL databases?
Yes. With Jam SQL Studio, run jam-sql add-skill to install the skill for Claude Code, Codex CLI, Cursor, GitHub Copilot, Windsurf and other detected agents, then enable the MCP server in Settings → AI Integrations. Claude Code can then list connections, read schema and run queries at the permission level you chose. DataGrip can also configure Claude Code automatically for its own MCP server.
What is the AI Workspace in Jam SQL Studio?
